The Therapy Relationship: Knowing How and When it Might Be Time to Move On

Episode Description:

Therapy is about healing, growth, and finding your voice. But what happens when that voice is telling you it's time for a change? And what if there is another voice telling you you’re wrong?

In this video, we're tackling the challenging topic of ending a therapeutic relationship, both the desire/need and the how. I'll explain why it's okay (and important) to question if your therapy is working for you, and discuss some signs that might indicate it's time for a change. I'll also share personal stories of my own therapy endings - spoiler: it's not easy, even for therapists!

This video is for anyone who's ever felt uncertain in the therapy relationship or process, unsure if it's okay to make a change, or simply curious about this part of the healing journey.

Episode Notes:

  • Many people experience doubts about their therapy relationships, questioning if their therapist is the right fit or if the process is truly helping them. Recognizing these feelings is essential and valid.

  • It's common to feel uncertain or even uncomfortable with a therapist, especially for those healing from childhood trauma. Building trust and safety takes time, and not feeling completely safe immediately doesn't necessarily indicate a poor fit.

  • Trusting your intuition is crucial. If the therapy feels off or unhelpful, it’s okay to consider other options. Part of healing involves learning to honor your own needs and boundaries.

  • Having an open conversation with your therapist about any concerns can be a healing experience, especially if the therapist responds in a healthy, supportive way. However, if their reaction isn’t appropriate, it may be time to move on.

  • Certain unprofessional behaviors—such as therapists frequently checking their phones or showing up late—are unacceptable and signal it may be best to seek a new therapist who respects the therapeutic relationship.
