Episode Description:
Does the thought of taking a rest day fill you with anxiety? Do you find yourself making excuses to avoid self-care, or feeling like you're being selfish when you do something nice for yourself? That knot in your stomach when you try to prioritize your own needs isn't random - it's a response rooted in trauma. Today, we're exploring why self-care can feel uncomfortable, scary, or even wrong for trauma survivors.
In today’s video, I talk about the consequences, from small to extreme, when we neglect self-care and honoring our needs. I’ll also break down the deeper psychological impact of childhood trauma on our relationship with self-care, and why those negative feelings come up when we try to nurture ourselves as well as the potential extreme consequences we neglect it.

Episode Notes:
- Neglecting self-care can diminish your sense of self-worth, reinforcing feelings of unworthiness and undeservingness.
- Lack of self-care may lead to physical and psychological issues, like exhaustion, stress, and chronic medical conditions, which are common among trauma survivors.
- Self-care is essential, even in small ways, to maintain connection with yourself and others; neglecting it can lead to feelings of disconnection and isolation.
- Physical needs, such as nutrition, hydration, and rest, are crucial; ignoring them can send a message to yourself that your needs don’t matter.
- Over time, neglecting self-care can bring up old, harmful beliefs about your worth, making it harder to sustain the healing process.
